As far as I am aware it does not matter what you use as long as you don't use both. Google will view this as two distinct sites and could harm your ranking. I personally haven't bothered with this YET, altough I prefer www, don't know why, suppose I am just custom to it.
Has anyone bothered with this? You using a 301 from http to www or www to http?
Ah edit ** lol Sorry Club I just see this is a tutorial I see it after I posted. My bad.

I prefer to use www over non-www, I tend to type it when im writing in the address bar without even thinking about it. I guess a web address doesnt seem complete to me until it has the www.
Also, most popular sites tend to redirect to www such as myspace/facebook/google/amazon/youtube etc. The only popular website I have noticed that uses non-www is twitter.

I do like the www as well.. It is weird because I don't always type www in the browser when I am going to a site.. have also noticed twitter doesn't use the www I think it's just a matter of preference or people being so use to having the www in there that want to make it familiar with longtime internet users

Re http://naturalbornsk...-www-vs-no-www/
(apparently we cannot add replies or comments to tutorials?)
In case you are doing this with a live site/user base...
Just wanted to mention that if any webmasters find themselves sorting out a situation like this, and start getting problems from users, remember to ask them about bookmarks.
One thing you can try, is to establish that a user is typing your site name into the address bar, then re-save their bookmark.
Details are long forgotten, may not even apply in this day and age, but I do remember once we started removing www from a site, we had all kinds of weird fallout, and user bookmarks had uss mighty confused for a day or two! Users never happen to mention how they are (not) getting to your site...
Never really solved this once and for all until we made a dual DNS entry: both www and site pointing to same IP.

When viewing tutorials or downloads system there is a "view support topic" so you can comment there... http://naturalbornsk...-www-vs-no-www/

Thank you @ClubUgly for this topic and discussion.
I had not thought through the importance or implications of “www or no-www” until reading your tutorial. However in light of this and the comments I have taken the opportunity to set my default to www.
By the way I note that in making this redirection I discovered that if your host uses CPanel it has a utility (www Redirects) to assist novices set up permanent redirections. Further the utility’s instructions note that “A permanent redirect will notify the visitor's browser to update any bookmarks that are linked to the page that is being redirected.” As such redirections and notifying members are easily accommodated.
